One way to deal with a gaping pothole…

Update! Jan 13 — The pothole is fixed, but rumor is the city did it and not the county, which is actually responsible.

… Just put a construction barrel in it. Not over it, but in it — that’s how big this sucker is — as was done on Gen. Mitchell Blvd., which is a county street. The large fissure behind the barrel runs along, more or less, the center line of the north-south street. Numerous fissure branches head off to the east and west.

The street is falling apart and is, quite frankly, a hazard to vehicles and the people riding in or on them. This pothole is one of the worst along this stetch of the road (just north of the I-94 overpass) but is by no means the only one that can do damage.

Who d’ya know wants to really overpay for the old greenhouse site?

The undeveloped greenhouse site at N. 51st St. and W. Bluemound Rd. can be yours for a mere 234% of its assessed value, according an advertisement on the Milwaukee version of Craig’s List.

Story Hill Place 51st and Bluemound. Condo Project, (3) 2 Family condo units with approved plans. Developed and ready to build. No impact fees. Private street.
760,000.00

Yowza! The total assessed value for the site is $324,400, according to records online at the city assessor’s office. And let’s not forget, property values in the city have fallen dramatically since the last assessment, which reflect January 2008 values.

Story Hill Investments, LLC, which now owns the site, won city approval to build condos there, but operators Sheila Firari and Lance Dornbrook didn’t even bother to mow the weeds this summer (compelling the city to do it for them and garnering them a cool  $1,215 in special charges on their property tax bills) or shovel the walk this winter, making for hazardous walking along Bluemound. Story Hill Place is now being used to store snow from the recent endless snow storms.

We lose our mailbox after all

Maybe it’s unusual for a neighborhood to rally around a mailbox, but that is what Story Hill did when the US Postal Service threatened to remove it in 2006.

Flyers went out to residents decrying the potential loss of the little blue box on W. Bluemound Rd. and N. Story Pkwy. And yes, the Postal Service backed down.

That was then, this is now. Victory is fleeting. We won the battle, but lost the war. Etc., etc.

The Postal Service is back, and it wants our mailbox. So long, sweet friend! Your door was always open to us!

Be careful on that Miller Park walkway

The Miller Park Stadium District has hired a contractor to divert the water that flows continuously across the sidewalk bordering the southwestern stadium parking lot, according to District Executive Director Mike Duckett.

The work, though, has not yet begun and the walk may be treacherous in icy weather. Walkers who take that route for their daily constitutionals should be careful.

District officials wanted the work done before the cold weather set in, but the contractor fell behind on other work and has not started the stadium job, Duckett said.

The plan is to capture the water before it spills over the sidewalk and send it to a storm sewer, Duckett said. The work will cost about $10,000.

Story Hill residents have expressed concern about the potential perils of the continuous water flow.
