In the hood — car break-ins galore

Story Hillers — Lock your cars and close your garage doors. The summer thieves are out. The Milwaukee Police Department is reporting some car break-ins in the neighborhood over the past few days, and it appears somebody ripped off my very nice, new bike mirror from the bike parked in my garage (dumb me, must have left that door open). At least the miscreant left the bike. From what I’m hearing, not all the car break-ins were reported to police and the incidents may be somewhat more widespread than appears from police reports.

  1. Hi Gretchen,

Thanks for this post – the Story Hill Neighborhood Association Board continually reminds our neighbors to keep their cars, garages and homes locked to prevent and deter theft and burglary. So much so that we hosted the new MPD Captain of District #3 at our June annual meeting.

So sorry to hear about your bike mirror – hope you can fix or replace it.

A board member who works for the MPD tells me that only one theft has been reported to date – 363 N. Story Pkwy – sometime between Aug. 9 and 11. I subscribe to the City’s E-Notify site to be notified of incidents that occur within Story Hill. I haven’t seen this one yet – but then I usually get the reports 10-14 days afterwards.

Perhaps in a subsequent post, you can encourage folks to call MPD for EVERY break-in, so there is a record of these offenses, and we can build a case for more patrols, better neighbor vigilance, etc.

    Thanks again Gretchen!

  2. Sandy — I also was counting the one in the 900 block of 49th. That is not within the borders of SHNA area, but seems to be part of a localized pattern considering the car on Story, my mirror, etc. Another neighborhood household had its car rifled this week as well. Didn’t mean to make it sound like crime is overwhelming, but there does seem to be something going on here.
