Gretchen - Words cannot express. You have my deepest sympathies. You and Dave were clearly friends and soul-mates, as well as husband and wife.

Gretchen -- I am so sorry to hear this news and I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't know if we've spoken or been in contact since we both covered the Outlaws trial for those many months in the Federal Courthouse several years ago now. But I always read your husband's stories and admired his wonderful reporting and writing. What a terrible loss for the journalism community as well.

Gretchen,

The world is a sadder place without Dave.

I could write 30 inches of copy on what a great guy Dave was. I think of all the stories we worked on together, all the late nights at the Sentinel, all the times Joe Manning called him Doeggie. Dave so regularly scooped everyone. I remember that an assistant D.A. once told me that he told Dave things he didn't tell his own wife. He was a great reporter - the kind that doesn't exist anymore.

But more importantly, he was a good person. He could always tell he really cared about the people about whom he wrote. And he cared about the people worked with. And he obviously loved you.

Dave is going to be missed. I am so sorry for your loss.

See you on Thursday.

Gretchen,

We hope you know how many people care about you, and how much Dave was respected and appreciated, both personally and professionally. He had a gift for portraying the humanity in every story he wrote, and he was a fine, fine writer. Our hearts go out to you, along with our thoughts and prayers. -- Karen and Tom

Gretchen,
My deepest and most sincere condolences. Dave was always one of my favorite guys in the newsroom. Good at what he did and just a good person to be around. Our world and our business are an emptier place without him.

God bless and be with you in this awful time.

Gretchen-

You have our deepest sympathies. Dave was missed the moment he left his assignment in the Milwaukee County Courthouse. He was an extraordinary individual who performed his job with integrity and thoroughness. Our thoughts are with Becky as well.

Gretchen,

Please accept my sincere condolences about Dave's passing. He and my husband, Bill, worked together in the Waukesha bureau after Dave was transferred there from the Milwaukee County Courthouse. Bill always appreciated Dave's ability to turn a dry court case into a great story.

Would a memorial to the Elmbrook Humane Society be out of line? I serve on the shelter's board of directors, and Bill is on one of our fundraising committees. Please let me know.

Bill and I willl see you on Thursday.

Take care,
